Broadcast November 25, 1981 — Veteran dancer Gregory Hines (1946-2003) dances a duet with “beginner” Steve Martin (born 1945), who says he has just completed his “first MGM musical,” “Pennies from Heaven.” This was a bright spot in an era of few TV variety shows. Greg Hines was already beloved in the worldwide dance communities, and Martin was carving a niche for himself in traditional Terpsichore, which was insignificant to most entertainers in 1981. This was, after all, four years before the MGM film “That’s Dancin’” validated the work of many old song and dance artists. The song “Fit As A Fiddle” was written in 1932 by Arthur Freed (lyrics) and Al Goodhart & Al Hoffman (music). This little bit of show biz gave Martin another well-deserved feather in his cap, one that set him apart from any other stand up or sketch comedian.

    That was soooo wonderful! Thank you so much for posting! :o )

  2. UncleBebby says:

    Actually, according to Martin, he never saw himself as talented, he just practiced and practiced until he got it right. We may see it as gift, but to him, it’s all hard work.

    Without a doubt, one of the best pieces of entertainment I’ve seen. Steve Martin is so talented (I heard he even did his own appendix operation)… and God do I miss Gregory Hines. RIP you very talented man!!!

    Steve Martin is so good at everything, and is especially amazing at the banjo! He is so blessed to have so many gifts and to see him dancing alongside veteran dancer Gregory Hines is breathtaking and a joy to behold!

    I can watch this over and over. Great entertainment (and song) from a bygone era. There must be something Steve Martin can’t do well !

  12. Adelaidey says:

    Is there anything Steve Martin can’t do? He was cheating on those wings, but his sounds are very clean AND he managed to be funny at the same time. Watch this and his Gong Show banjo performance and be blown away by this near-perfect man.

  17. badrice says:

  18. Omnipharious says:

    hines was holding back- why?
    ::sighs::…

  19. garrettmillerdrums says:

    You misunderstood my meaning. Cheers.

  20. ZachsMind says:

    garrettmillerdrums: “hahaha, steve martin served gregory hines. Nice.”

    Martin gave a respectable showing, but to say Hines was “served”?? Hardly. In fact, Hines was purposefully holding back. If you’ve seen Hines’ other dance work you’d know he was using kid gloves that night, knowing that his job was to support Martin, not show him up. That’s the kinda guy Hines was.
