wow he’s smoking, that’s cool
A prop phone: $5.00
Fake recordings on your answering machine: $10.00
Carson’s reaction: priceless
Saw it comming but it was still great.
It was always good when they made Johnny laugh.
ha ha ha ha …really funny!
Kind of like Paul Shaffer on the Late Show nowadays.
Timelessly funny — though, I DO think that the final joke played even better back then, inasmuch as such things were still taboo and no one in the studio audience saw it coming (as evidenced by the perfect silence before the punch line). Nowadays, audience members would probably expect it and some anticipatory titters would be heard moments before the delivery.
Man, Steve Martin is funny. And, boy, do I really miss Johnny Carson.
I love Carson’s laugh at the end. Johnny, we miss you, man. Steve, we hope you keep all of us laughing for many years to come.
OMG!! Incredibly funny stuff. Martin is a genius!

I wish the comedians was half as funny today! Sure there are some pretty funny stuff nowadays but you can´t compare. Real comedy died in the 80s thats fore sure. More giants like Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and so on for the people…!
Steve Martin did alot for Carson…Two great minds that will live on. Steve did the magic act for Carson and is on the Carson DVD’s Very Funny.
Love seeing Johnny take a drag of his cig at the end..classic
Was he born with grey hair!!!!!
lol…omg!!
This really shows how great he was back when he was “funny”. This is actually one of my favorite moments though it’s not one of his classic bits or anything. Just something he put together for a Tonight Show appearance and it’s classic. When you get a reaction like that from Johnny (reaching for a puff off of his hidden cig no less) you know you’re doing it.
don’t be embarrassed
don’t be embarrassed
johnny’s sneaken a toke
looks like a young (albeit gray) Kevin Kline
