Steve Martin performing his song “King Tut” on stage at the Universal Amphitheatre, on September 28th, 1979… Enjoy!

I’m not too sure what Henry Winkler (That’s right, The Fonz himself) was doing there, considering that’s all we see of him during the entire show, but it makes for an awesome cameo…

What a genius. He’s the only comedian who can instantly put a smile on my face, he’s so likable.

      12. aCrzyJya says:

Ah haha! It’s his mojo. That’s why. If he was doing this half-assed, it’d look dumb. But when you put your soul in it. It’s just soo much more funnier. :]

I love Martin’s movies (most of them), but I have to admit, I’m one of the ones that doesn’t quite get his stand-up. I mean this song is mildly amusing at best. His crazy dancing makes it a little funnier. But meh. dont get it.

I have not heard this song for decades, but I always was amused by it back when it was new. I would’ve thought it had been completely forgotten, but in reading the comments posted here, it seems multiple teachers show it in class when they’re teaching about Egypt today.

The version that was released as a record was also live, as I remember, but probably was from when he performed it on SNL. It sounded just like this one.

this out of print video does give a glimpse of what it was like at the height of his stand up, it also may answer questions about on the WILD AND CRAZY GUY record why the audience spends all that time cheering. i saw this video in stores for many years and such, and I finally got to see this. Too bad it is NOT on dvd. It is awesome!!! (I swear he did the same routines…) His last album “…brothers” is not up to par, and I understand.

      23. TEMPmichaelhansen says:

back at his peak, i was too young to understand. I was fascinated by ‘king tut’/steve martin, but my parents wouldnt let me listen to his records…in 6th grade, I finally heard the full album. I am a fan, but I understand why Steve quit. I swear-in all these previews-he does the same routines again & again…and a lot of people dont understand his comedy [to this day]… too much space taking up to explaine, but this VHS is out of print for years…

Yup, Born Standing Up is an incredibly insightful book, I got it for Xmas!

      25. Winifred214 says:

He is fantastic, and I HIGHLY recommend his book “Born Standing Up”. A touching, fascinating guy who, despite all, I still think underestimates his own talents, including in music; see also:
